The Australian Red Cross Cord Blood Bank level 3 extensions presents a unique and challenging project in constructing another full operational level to the existing building. This will involve demolition of part of the existing roof structure and constructing new walls from the existing concrete roof deck. The existing deck has been structurally designed to take the load of the new level 3 extension.
All construction will take place whilst keeping the existing Australian Red Cross Blood Service building fully operational both to staff and the general public.
It will comprise of creating new AFS concrete panel walls which are light weight panels dowelled and anchored on the existing deck and filled with concrete via pumping from the ground floor level creating a new structural façade ready to be jointed and rendered to compliment the aesthetics of the existing structure. A conventional structural steel roof lined with metal deck roof sheeting will complete the building envelope.
Exposure to the elements is another challenging factor during this operation with construction activity sequenced to make the new level water tight as soon as practically possible thus minimising the risk of exposure to the elements to the occupied existing floor immediately below that of construction.
